Focus and Scope

The Journal of Sociology in the Global South (JSGS) focuses on the advancement of sociological scholarship that critically engages with the social dynamics, structures, and transformations within the Global South. The journal prioritizes theoretically grounded and empirically rigorous studies that contribute to the diversification of global sociological knowledge and challenge the dominance of Eurocentric perspectives.

JSGS welcomes original research articles, theoretical papers, and critical reviews that explore, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Social inequality, poverty, and development
  • Urbanization and rural transformation
  • Migration, mobility, and transnationalism
  • Digital society and technological change
  • Gender, sexuality, and social inclusion
  • Environmental issues and sustainability
  • Culture, religion, and identity politics
  • Governance, democracy, and civil society
  • Education, labor, and social policy
  • Conflict, peacebuilding, and social resilience

The journal particularly encourages contributions that adopt decolonial approaches, Southern theories, and context-sensitive methodologies that reflect the lived realities and epistemological traditions of the Global South. Interdisciplinary perspectives that intersect with anthropology, political science, human geography, cultural studies, and related fields are highly welcomed.

In addition, JSGS gives special attention to island and maritime societies, recognizing their unique socio-cultural configurations and strategic significance in understanding global and regional transformations.

All submissions must demonstrate strong methodological rigor, clear theoretical contribution, and relevance to broader sociological debates. The journal is committed to fostering inclusive, critical, and globally engaged scholarship that amplifies voices and knowledge production from historically underrepresented regions.
