Plagiarism and Generative AI
Plagiarism Policy
Jurnal Penelitian dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (JPPM)
Jurnal Penelitian dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (JPPM) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity, originality, and ethical scholarship. All submissions must represent original work derived from research and/or community engagement (service-learning) activities and must be free from any form of plagiarism, including self-plagiarism, redundant publication, and improper citation practices.
To ensure originality, all manuscripts are screened using Turnitin plagiarism detection software prior to the peer-review process. Manuscripts with a similarity index exceeding acceptable limits will be returned to the authors for revision or rejected at the editorial stage.
Similarity Threshold
- Maximum similarity index: 20% (overall)
- Similarity from a single source should not exceed 5%
- Properly cited quotations and references are excluded from misconduct considerations
Editorial decisions are not based solely on similarity percentage but also consider context, citation accuracy, and overall academic integrity. Even manuscripts with low similarity scores may be rejected if plagiarism or unethical reuse is identified.
Types of Unacceptable Practices
- Direct plagiarism (copying without proper attribution)
- Mosaic plagiarism (patchwriting without appropriate citation)
- Self-plagiarism or duplicate submission/publication
- Data fabrication or falsification
- Inadequate acknowledgment of sources
- Misrepresentation of community-based data or service outcomes
Sanctions and Actions
If plagiarism is detected at any stage:
- Before review: manuscript will be rejected
- During review: review process will be terminated
- After publication: article may be corrected or retracted in accordance with COPE guidelines
JPPM reserves the right to notify authors’ institutions in cases of serious ethical violations.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Usage Policy
Jurnal Penelitian dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (JPPM)
1. Policy Rationale
JPPM recognizes the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic research, technological innovation, and community-based problem solving. As an interdisciplinary journal that integrates research and community engagement, JPPM acknowledges that AI tools can enhance analytical processes, improve accessibility, and support knowledge dissemination.
However, the journal emphasizes that scholarly work—especially those involving community contexts—must remain grounded in human critical thinking, contextual understanding, ethical responsibility, and real-world accountability. Therefore, AI use must be carefully regulated to preserve academic integrity and societal relevance.
2. Definition of AI Tools
AI tools refer to computational systems utilizing machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and generative models to assist in producing or analyzing scholarly content.
These include, but are not limited to:
- Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude)
- Language enhancement tools (e.g., Grammarly, DeepL Write)
- AI-assisted data analysis and coding platforms
- Automated literature discovery tools
- AI-supported visualization and modeling software
3. Acceptable Use of AI
a. Permissible Applications
Authors may use AI for:
- Improving grammar, clarity, and academic writing quality
- Supporting non-native English authors
- Managing references and citations
- Conducting preliminary literature searches
- Assisting data analysis (with full verification)
- Creating original visualizations (charts/diagrams)
b. Prohibited Uses
- Generating full manuscripts or core arguments without substantial human input
- Fabricating or manipulating research or community data
- Creating false or misleading citations
- Automated paraphrasing leading to plagiarism
- Simulating field data, interviews, or community engagement outcomes
- Misrepresenting AI-generated content as original human work
JPPM places strong emphasis on authenticity, particularly in research involving communities, empowerment programs, and service-learning activities.
4. Author Responsibility
Authors bear full responsibility for all submitted content, including AI-assisted sections. Authors must:
- Ensure accuracy, validity, and originality
- Verify all AI-generated outputs
- Eliminate bias, errors, or hallucinated content
- Maintain scientific and ethical rigor
5. Authorship Criteria
AI tools cannot be listed as authors. Authorship is limited to human contributors who:
- Conceptualize the study or program
- Conduct analysis or implementation
- Develop arguments and insights
- Take responsibility for the work
Any violation will result in immediate rejection.
6. Disclosure and Transparency
Authors must disclose AI usage beyond basic editing, including:
- Name and version of the AI tool
- Purpose of use
- Extent of contribution
- Confirmation of human verification
Suggested Disclosure Statement
“During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [AI Tool Name] for [specific purpose]. All outputs were critically reviewed and validated by the author(s), who take full responsibility for the final content.”
7. Placement of Disclosure
- Methods section → for analysis or technical use
- Acknowledgments → for language or minor assistance
- AI Statement section (recommended)
8. Editorial and Review Process
The editorial board evaluates AI usage as part of ethical screening. If misuse is suspected, the journal may:
- Request clarification
- Require revision
- Reject the manuscript
AI detection tools may be used as support, but final decisions remain human-based.
9. Sanctions
- Desk rejection
- Retraction
- Institutional notification
- Submission bans (temporary/permanent)
10. Appeals
Authors may submit formal appeals to the Editor-in-Chief with clear justification and evidence.
11. AI in Editorial Workflow
JPPM does not use AI for autonomous editorial decisions. Any AI support is limited, transparent, and supervised by editors.
12. Policy Updates
This policy will be periodically updated in response to technological and ethical developments.
13. Ethical Alignment
This policy aligns with:
- Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)
- International indexing standards (e.g., Scopus, WoS)
Closing Statement
JPPM supports the responsible use of AI to enhance—without replacing—scholarly and community-based knowledge production. The journal is committed to maintaining ethical rigor, interdisciplinary integrity, and meaningful contributions to sustainable social, economic, and cultural development.
